Amaghu
Amaghu is a village in Armenia's Vayots Dzor Province, part of the Areni community.
Amaghu lies amid Vayots Dzor's stark and striking landscape. Deep gorges and a rocky terrain here combine with a greener valley near Noravank, where grapevines, walnut, cherry and other fruit trees grow.
The village's history is closely tied to medieval Vayots Dzor. Hrashkaberd Fortress once stood in Amaghu's vicinity, and the area itself held major historical and cultural importance for centuries.
The site's chief monument is the Noravank monastery complex — one of the best-known monuments of medieval Armenian architecture. Amaghu's historical and cultural heritage is bound up with this very site.
As of 2003, 77 historical and cultural monuments were recorded within the village's territory.
Today Amaghu has no permanent population, yet its history lives on in the surrounding landscape, its medieval monuments, and Noravank — one of the foremost symbols of Vayots Dzor.
