Aghnjadzor
Aghnjadzor is a village in Armenia's Vayots Dzor Province.
The village's history reaches back to the Middle Ages. Aghnjadzor is already mentioned in the 13th–14th centuries, and during that period it belonged to the princely house of Orbelyan. An important trade route linking Tabriz and Partav passed through the area, so road development and the safety of caravans mattered greatly to the whole region.
One of the era's chief monuments is the Orbelyan caravanserai, built in 1332 not far from the Vardenyats Pass. It served as a resting place and shelter for travelers and trade caravans. A surviving building inscription confirms its construction date and its link to the Orbelyan princely house.
Aghnjadzor and its surroundings are rich in historical and cultural monuments. Remnants of medieval settlements and fortresses, caravanserais, old bridges, cemeteries and khachkars from the 9th–16th centuries survive here. A few kilometers from the village lie the ruins of Kapuyt Fortress, along with a medieval cemetery with carved khachkars from the 12th–14th centuries.
Today Aghnjadzor's economy still rests mainly on animal husbandry. Residents also engage in field farming, horticulture and beekeeping, growing grain and fodder crops.
Aghnjadzor is one of those Vayots Dzor villages where the history of medieval trade routes and the Orbelyan legacy are still preserved in its monuments and cultural landscape.
