Agarakadzor

Agarakadzor is a village in Armenia's Vayots Dzor Province, part of the Areni community.

Agarakadzor's history spans several centuries. The settlement is already mentioned in sources from the 12th–13th centuries, and in the Middle Ages it belonged to the powerful princely house of Orbelyan, which played a major role in the history of Vayots Dzor.

One of the village's most valuable monuments is the Agarakadzor Bridge, built in the 13th century under Prince Tarsaich Orbelyan. Road and trade-route development mattered greatly to the region, so the Orbelyans actively built bridges, caravanserais and other structures linking settlements with trading centers. The Agarakadzor Bridge has survived to this day and remains evidence of the high level of medieval engineering.

Agarakadzor's historical and cultural heritage is not limited to a single monument. Numerous sites of historical and architectural value survive within the village and its surroundings. As of 2003, 12 monument complexes comprising 52 monuments in total were registered here.

Today Agarakadzor is one of those places in Vayots Dzor where history continues to live on — not only in sources and archives, but in the village's own cultural landscape.
